This fabric collage quilt was a lot of fun to create. It started with a caterpillar my husband Cal found in our tree that we didn’t recognize what it was. We researched this strange looking bright green caterpillar and found it was going to turn into a swallowtail butterfly. I wanted to use some of my fabric scraps to make the caterpillar – hence the name ‘Scrappy Pete’. Once that was done, I thought how to embellish this piece. It didn’t have a story that would make it interesting. So, I decided to add some embroidered bugs going after Scrappy Pete and then added the butterflies above him wishing he could turn into a butterfly. The final touch is the caption “if only I had my wings”. Now I have a story.
